11/28/2009 – C.A.T. celebrates millions of miles of safe driving!

On November 28, 2009 C.A.T. had its annual Christmas Party and Safety Banquet where we celebrated the achievements of our drivers and staff. Drivers who had attained at least 300 000, 500 000 and 1 000 000 miles of driving without accident, incident or moving violation were recognized with plaques and prizes. C.A.T. is proud to announce that, in total, 37 drivers were able to achieve at least 300 000 miles without incident, and 19 of these have attained the 500 000 mile mark or higher! Many more drivers are on the verge of meeting this goal for next year.

Richard Mainville, with C.A.T. since June 2000, joins Zigmund Krolicki and Jan Ostapowicz (honoured last year) with more than 1 000 000 miles without accident or incident.

Jean-François Lettre was honoured this year with having achieved 2 291 909 accident-free miles!

Employees of the Year were also chosen for exceptional contributions to the C.A.T. team in 2009. The winners this year were:

Jean-François Lettre (driver), Glenn Pringle (driver), Gilles Mallette (driver), Martin Morel (garage), Brigitte Lalonde (planner) and Yves Royal (IT)

Congratulations to our drivers and team members, and good luck to those who are working hard to meet the challenges of next year!

10/05/2009 – C.A.T. successful in ground-breaking court battle on behalf of its drivers.

Since 2004, C.A.T. Inc. and its drivers have been challenging Canada Revenue Agency regarding the taxation of amounts paid to drivers to cover daily on-road expenses (Per Diem). C.A.T.’s position was that the Per Diem paid to its drivers was reasonable and should be excluded from a driver’s taxable revenue. This conflict did not impact C.A.T. alone; it had the potential to affect the notices of assessment of drivers in transport companies throughout Quebec. We knew that a court judgment in our favour would positively impact drivers with many Quebec carriers. Accordingly, we decided in 2006 to take the lead and support our drivers in a court case against the CRA in their bid to have their notices of assessment adjusted.

C.A.T. is delighted to announce that the conflict has been resolved, with the Canada Revenue Agency accepting our arguments and consenting to the court ruling in favour of our drivers. Needless to say, our drivers are delighted with the result! Our hope is that this judgment will benefit all drivers affected, whomever they work for, as the CRA and province adjust their taxation policies accordingly in subsequent years.

07/06/2009– Newly introduced “Driver Scorecards” raise the bar on performance expectations.

Scorecards have been an important management tool for some time, and now C.A.T has introduced the concept for its fleet of 140 drivers based at the Coteau-du-lac terminal. ‘Objective feedback is extremely important for employee motivation and for behaviour modification’ says Michelle Feder, C.A.T’s recently appointed Human Resources Coordinator. “We are building a culture of excellence and accountability, where good performers are rewarded and poorer performers are pressured to improve. Scorecards are an essential tool in this process.”

Driver scorecards are measures of a driver’s performance, specifically, objective measures directly related to the company’s objectives in three areas: safety, customer service and efficiency. Three times a year, drivers meet with their Team Managers in order to review their individual performance indicators for the previous months, the results pulled directly from the company’s operating system. This feedback helps keep drivers on track. They are regularly made aware of C.A.T’s objectives and are made clear on how they are doing. They are also able to assess their performance against other drivers in the fleet, with teams of drivers vying for the top spot. Drivers also have the opportunity to provide feedback of their own, giving management essential information on why things are working well and why they are not.

“Drivers consider the objective measures much fairer than the traditionally subjective performance review process” says Sylvio Ravary, senior Team Manager. “With this tool we will be able to build more sophisticated and more motivating compensation and reward systems.” Equally interesting is C.A.T’s increased ability to determine its training needs. Based on the scorecard results over time, the company will be able to build training modules that are much more specifically targeted to its operational needs and the needs of its drivers.

09/09/2008 – The Minister of International Trade paid a visit to C.A.T.  Indeed, in the first days of the federal election campaign, the conservative candidate in the riding of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Michael Fortier, current Minister with the Harper cabinet, came to visit C.A.T.’s headquarter to meet the employees and the management.  This impromptu meeting was an excellent occasion for Mr. Fortier to visit the terminal and better understand the operations of the company, as well as to get acquainted with several of his prospective voters.  Altogether a visit appreciated by all!

02/19/2008 - In recent weeks, C.A.T. Inc was presented the "Truck Load Carrier of the Year Award" from Rheem Manufacturing, a major account for C.A.T.'s Mexican division. With the current challenges the transportation industry is being faced with, this award brings C.A.T. Inc pride and a sense of motivation. Thanks to its dedicated staff who offered consistency in service and delivery. This award demonstrates the excellence C.A.T. Inc has been known for over the past 30 years.

11/19/2007 - C.A.T. is pleased to welcome Lucie Deslauriers to its team as Customer Service Manager. With over 13 years of experience in Customer Service, Lucie will be responsible for improving our customer service best practices as well as customer service excellence throughout our terminals and partners. We look forward to Lucie’s valued contribution as C.A.T.’s newest team member.

07/13/2007 - C.A.T. acquires a simulator.  Always eager to offer to its drivers all the tools to improve their driving skills, C.A.T. purchased a few months ago a TranSim simulator.  In the upcoming weeks, this major teaching investment will be the center piece of many programs and will be used to do on-going training of all our drivers and remedial training when small slips might be detected.
